What is Information Technology and Human Development?
Information Technology and Human Development (ITHD) is a new field of study. It is a social science which deals with the development of IT and its application in human welfare. It deals with the use of IT in various fields of life and its effect on human society as well as individual development.
The concept of Information Technology and Human Development has been developed by the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).
The main objective of this concept is to raise the quality of living standards in developing countries by applying IT in different fields of education, health, agriculture, business management, energy, etc.
Fields of Study in ITHD
ITHD is a new field that is still evolving. It focuses on the development of IT and its application in different fields of life. So, there are some of the main fields of study in ITHD which are described below:
1. Human Resource Development
Human Resource Development deals with training, education, and professional development in IT. It includes the studies of policies and practices related to education, training, and professional development in IT.
2. Management Information Systems
The use of IT in management is studied under the field of Management Information Systems (MIS). MIS covers all the aspects related to management including business management, industrial management, public management, etc. MIS covers all the aspects related to managing information and information systems.
3. Computer Science
Computer Science deals with all technical aspects of computers that include hardware as well as software systems. Also, Computer Science includes studies about all kinds of software applications including operating systems as well as programming languages used for developing different kinds of software applications.
4. Computer Applications in Education
This field studies how educational institutions can use computer technology to provide quality education to students at a lower cost than traditional methods. It also studies how technology can be used for improving educational achievements at the school level or higher educational institutions like colleges and universities.

Information Technology for Developing Countries (ITDC) aims at using IT for improving living standards in developing countries by providing quality education at lower costs than traditional methods and providing healthcare services at lower costs than traditional healthcare delivery mechanisms.
6. IT and Society
The use of IT in society such as its effect on society, social inequality, social change, social justice, etc. is studied under the field of Information Technology and Society (ITS).
7. IT and Global Development
This field studies how IT can contribute to global development by developing more efficient and effective global institutions dealing with issues like poverty reduction, health care services, education, etc.
8. IT and Individual Development
This field studies the effect of IT on individual development such as its use in human development, personal growth, self-development, self-actualization, etc.
9. Studies on ICT Diffusion and Development
ICT stands for Information and Communication Technology. It is a new concept introduced by the World Summit on the Information Society. ICT is a broader concept that covers all the aspects of IT. So, studies related to the field of ICT diffusion and development are also included in ITHD.
