In general, ISSOs are the ones to make and install security measures. This is so that they keep sensitive info within a computer network safe.
Most ISSO has a bachelor’s degree in computer programming or mathematics. Or other IT-related courses.
Then, most companies will need other certifications. And most ISSOs continue their education even after getting a job.
But worry not. Even it means constant learning, they are paid well. On average, they earn around $98,350. Higher than the median annual salary of $80,912.
Then, job growth is seeing a steady rise. It is expected to see a 38% growth in the next seven years.
Which is higher than other jobs out there. This is because ISSOs are in demand in whichever sector. Finance, healthcare, public sector. All these and more need an ISSO.
So, what are the roles they need to play?
ISSO Roles
Concerning a company’s information security (Infosec), ISSO will need to:
- research
- make one
- install one
- test it
- review it
So, with this, their main aim is to protect sensitive information. And also keep any unwanted access from happening.
Then, they will need to inform users on:
- security measures
- potential threats
- how to install software
- follow security measures
- keep watch on their networks
Also, they will need to keep up with the latest Infosec threats. Then, put up security measures. Like installing firewalls and more.
Further, they will need to make sure of the company’s security compliance. This will avoid them from getting fined in the future.
Then, they will need to assess any changes they will make in the system. Whether it be an upgrade or update.
Also, they need to check for any weak spots in their security. And patch up any openings they see.
To be one, you need to:
- spend at least five to eight years in the Infosec field
- security clearance status of TS/SCI
- get certifications to be a fully certified ISSO
- have strong technical and analytical skills
- have strong communication, teamwork, and leadership skills
So, after graduating, you still need to do a lot to be an ISSO. But do not worry.
Due to the rise of many cybersecurity risks, there is a high demand for ISSOs. Especially in the:

- Department of Homeland Security
- and other public agencies and large enterprises
